Contemporary City Garden
Wrapping planting around the exterior walls of this inner-city garden allows the clients to be able to entertain whilst also enjoy a tranquil space to be in or view from the inside of their contemporary new build home. The bespoke brick planter integrates raised areas for planting, an additional seating area and space for a barbeque, which increases the way this garden can be used. The introduction of climbing jasmine and hydrangeas against the border walls provide year round horticultural structure but also a lush green backdrop for the colour and texture of specimen plants mixed with small evergreen shrubs and perennials. What was once an uninspiring space has been turned into a contemporary and elegant green haven, which can be enjoyed well into the evenings with exterior lighting illuminating the specimen planting. Small Suburban Garden
The overall design is inspired by the client brief of creating a contemporary city garden - where one can relax and socialise surrounded by soft and simple planting. The introduction of geometric beds that run the length of the garden create a contemporary feel through their clean horizontal lines. Inlaid bricks matching the existing brick walls add texture and warmth and break up both planting areas and the self-binding gravel that is primarily used as the ground material for the small pathways and central seating area. The slated timber fencing bring in more light to the north facing garden whilst also providing more privacy. A specimen acer, evergreen shrubs and seasonal perennials surround the seating area, providing year round interest from within the garden and when one is looking on to the garden from the kitchen and living room. Tranquil City Garden
The brief for this garden was to combine an English cottage feel, with a Mediterranean herb garden. The design uses a minimal palette of materials and colours creating a cohesive feel, letting nature take a hold in what can be an abrasive inner city landscape. Stepping-stones running down the middle of the garden allow more areas for planting and lawn and a small bench introduces an area of solitude whereas the larger gravelled area provides a flexible area for dining and entertaining. Stone set within gabion raised planters and edging create a contemporary dry stone wall effect and introduce warming colours, whilst metal and wooden planters and pots provide additional textures and visual interest. The use of blue hues soften the original fencing and garden shed and compliment the colour of the combination of planting including the clients original fruit bushes. Click to see more images |
New Build Garden
The introduction of 3 platforms of different heights divides the garden into social and recreational areas, whilst also creating focal points and vistas, one can enjoy within and looking out on to the garden. The varying levels, created through natural slopes, platforms, a raised bed and planting, introduce visual interest throughout the garden, taking ones attention away from the neighbouring houses. The configuration has also been designed to capture the sunniest spots in the space such as the ‘productive wall' where fruit trees can be trained, and the patio area, where one is surrounded by aromatic evergreen and perennial herbs. Stepping stones and more conventional steps cut within the slopes and set within the platforms weave in different directions, inviting one to discover different areas of the garden. Woodland Family Garden
The planting of this north facing garden is inspired by the surrounding landscape and the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall . Planted in circular timber and willow raised beds are climbers, ferns, perennials and bulbs providing pockets of colour, creating an essence of a wild woodland garden. Entering the garden you walk along a path that is lined either side with raised beds. Making use of the sunny entrance passage, herbs, seasonal vegetables and fruit bushes take up residence along with teepee structures for climbers in the summer. Making use of the minimal sunshine a horseshoe shape dining area nestles into the sunniest corner surrounded by flowering perennials and small fruit bushes. The shape of the lawn and surrounding raised timber structure with hellebores and harts tongue ferns carry on the theme of making all areas of this garden not out of keeping with a woodland that is magically happened upon….the original brief. Terrace Garden
The introduction of the metal weave trellis and sinuous paved curve on the ground bring a movement to the square shape of the garden which envelops the occupant into a space of tranquility and solace. The trellis evokes a hedgerow as it supports evergreen and deciduous climbers, a welcoming addition for wildlife. Ground cover follows the shape of the inset paved curve, whilst also breaking up the larger paving stones. A water feature situated in the existing space between the raised beds provides a focal point which one can view from the balcony and also sit next to on the terrace. The numerous pots sit on the paved curve which provides a more formal arrangement making the garden feel and look more cohesive. Click to see more images |
