Public Gardens
Bedminster - Bristol
In what was once an unloved thoroughfare of Bristol a small design intervention took place with a twist. The design repurposes commercial bins and agricultural animal troughs as planters filled with evergreen grasses and introducing solid oak beams for seating. An area famed for street art as a backdrop now has a foreground inspired by Bristol visual culture that encourage people to take 5 minutes to watch the world go by, along a busy market street. Willow Tree Kindergarten
The brief was to design a garden where children can be playful - whilst also allowing the magic of nature to support learning. The design is based around a series of concentric circles and curves inspired by the principle that these shapes support childhood growth. Introducing an entrance and network of pathways aids navigation of the larger space whilst connecting the different planting and play activity areas. The pathway boundaries are marked with inset cut discs of round timber, which with the combination of wood-chip for ground cover aids the natural movement of children in open space. Curved raised beds allow gardening activities which is now a central focus to being outside, whilst also introducing seasonal colour and texture. The stumpery of logs and hollow tree trunks provides an opportunity for teaching about insects, along with coppiced hazel fencing, add to the tactile nature and magical feel of the garden.
